The Kansas City Chiefs have managed to pick up various great wins within their long-running existence. The NFL has bore witness to multiple different events when this has happened, and we’re about to take a look back at some of them. While the most recent great victory for them was when they overcame the San Francisco 49ers at the 2020 Super Bowl, what else has taken place in the team’s history?
September 1, 1963
Starting out by going way back to the 60s with this one, when the Chiefs first operated under the Kansas City moniker. They had previously been the Dallas Texans, but owner Lamar Hunt opted to move them and rebrand them. With the move, the Chiefs drafted in Bobby Bell, Ed Budde and Buck Buchanan – three of the greatest players to ever spend their careers in the Kansas uniform. For the Chiefs’ first game in history on September 1, they stood on the field against the Denver Broncos and thrashed them 59-7.
January 4, 1970
The Chiefs had had a long-running rivalry with the Oakland Raiders ever since both teams first existed. The Texans had beaten the Raiders in their first game, which took place in Oakland. The Raiders won the Western Division in 1969, giving the Chiefs two out of their three losses that season. Yet, in their third encounter in the AFL Championship, the Raiders and the Chiefs would meet again. While things started out great for Oakland, the Chiefs soon fired back, earning a wonderful 17-7 victory over their rivals. That win sent Kansas City to their second Super Bowl ever – an event which they blasted through the Minnesota Vikings in to win.
December 22, 1991
Since the Super Bowl IV appearance, Kansas City had suffered through the playoffs, not winning a single one. In the last game of the 1981 season, fans were hopeful that they’d come out on the winning end against the Los Angeles Raiders. The winner of the event would have the home field advantage. The Chiefs would lead the whole game, thanks to a 152-yard rushing performance led by Barry Word. They went on to win 27-21, and the following week, they had their first playoff win in 21 years.
October 5, 2003
The Denver Broncos weren’t particularly appreciated by Kansas fans, especially in week five of 2003 when they played in the Chiefs’ hometown. Both teams were undefeated by this time, and things looked bad for the Chiefs when the Broncos took the earlier advantage. They remained on top throughout, holding on to a 23-17 lead with only eight minutes of gameplay left. On fourth down, Denver took the decision to punt the ball deep. Dante Hall took that punt on the seven-yard line and, for the fourth time in the season, delivered a record-tying performance. He returned that punt 93 yards for a touchdown, which allowed the Chiefs to steam ahead and win.
